Najib later said he did not imply the Boeing 777 had crashed or there were no survivors. – The Malaysian Insider file pic, April 2, 2014.Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak must admit that he made a mistake when he announced on March 24 that MH370 had ended in the southern Indian Ocean and later attempted to imply that he did not mean that the plane had crashed or that there were no survivors, opposition politicians said today.
DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang told reporters at the Parliament lobby that the mistake was obvious when Najib tabled a motion of sympathy for the families the day after making the announcement, implying that there were no survivors.
He said text messages were also sent out by MAS while its chief executive Ahmad Jauhari Yahya had mentioned in a press conference that there were no survivors.
After the announcement caused anger and frustration among mainly families of the Chinese passengers, acting Transport Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein defended Najib by saying the prime minister did not say the plane had crashed or there were no survivors.
Relatives of passengers said Putrajaya should apologise for prematurely claiming that the plane had crashed.
Datuk Mahfuz Omar (Pas-Pokok Sena) wanted to know if the government would be taking action against local media which had reported that the plane had crashed in the Indian Ocean, and implied that all those on board had died.
"The acting transport minister said they were considering taking action against international media that carried false reports on the missing plane.
“Are they going to take action against the media that carried the reports suggesting there were no survivors?" he asked.
Lim said Putrajaya should have released the transcript of the communications from the cockpit of the missing jetliner at the start and not now after more than three weeks.
The Transport Ministry had said in a statement on Monday that "Good night, Malaysian three seven zero", was the last conversation between the air traffic controller and the cockpit of the missing jet.
It was previously reported that the last communication from the cockpit was "All right, good night".
The statement also said Hishammuddin had instructed the investigating team to release the full transcript, which made available during a briefing to the next-of-kin of MH370's passengers and crew.
Lim said he shared the anger and shame of Malaysians on the correction issued on the matter, following the revelation by China's CCTV that the last words were different from what the Department of Civil Aviation had originally revealed.
"This is another mistake that should not have happened. It reflects poorly on the competence and transparency of our system of governance.”
He said the past 25 days since the plane went missing had exposed other mistakes and weaknesses, including the exact time the plane lost contact, on the air turn back and the Royal Malaysian Air Force’s supposed assumption that the turn back was ordered by the control tower.
Given these conflicting statements by the authorities, Lim said it was imperative that a parliamentary select committee on MH370 be set up to investigate its disappearance.
Lim added that the latest Merdeka Center survey revealed that 50% of respondents were not happy with the authorities' handling of the MH370 crisis – something which should be taken seriously.
He said Putrajaya should not hit back at the rakyat by labelling them anti-nationalistic for expressing such views.
"It is because we love and take pride in how Malaysia is viewed in the eyes of the world, but it does not change the fact that the people have a lot of questions about the handling of the crisis," he said.
The survey carried out by the Merdeka Center for Opinion Research among 1,005 respondents revealed that only 43% were satisfied with the way Putrajaya was dealing with the issue.
The majority of Chinese and Indian respondents were dissatisfied, at 74% and 59% respectively. Only 18% of Chinese and 36% of Indian polled said they were satisfied.
But 63% of Malay respondents expressed satisfaction with the handling compared with 30% who said they were not. – April 2, 2014.

Najib hasn't got the goods to admit any wrong doing. Not surprisingly he was trying to be clever, thinking he could steal the thunder, so to speak, by declaring his hand about where MH370 ended up and the cost to 239 lives. What do I mean? (1) Being the populist, and given his political star is sinking faster than a meteorite, he though he could win public support by being seen to be a :"strong leader with a good and compassionate head on his shoulders". (2) Noticing that Hisham Hussein was doing a far better job of fronting the media scrum in dealing with the MH370 crisis, he started to soil his pants, thinking that the Mahathirists will latch on to this and start a fire under his backside and that Hisham would be elevated politically over him in the popularity stakes. To some extent Hisham has. Even I, as doggedly cynical as I am, was 'persuaded' by Hisham's performance but after slapping myself I began to see through him too. So, whilst there are those who accuse the foreign governments of playing geopolitical games in the hunt for MH370, there's one political game being played right on every Malaysian's doorstep too. Both Najib and Hisham are away in Australia and Hawaii respectively. watch which mainstream media gives what kind of coverage of both dudes. This, in itself, should speak volumes about the emerging dogfight behind closed doors between Najib the BS Transformer Razak and Hisham the KerisMan Hussein.

if Anwar and Kit siang are PM and Transport Minister respectively, they will mess the whole thing just as Najib and Hisham. This tragedy is unprecedented. I still give a THUMB UP to Hisham.

I am no fan of this prime minister. Also no fan of any non-stop politicking politicians, be it from Be End and also Pakatan. It is becoming more clear that some of Pakatan leaders are fast becoming into Malaysia's own version of Tea Party's overzealous movement. There will be no event, no occasion, no tragedy that cannot escape from being touched by unnecessary politicking.

I am glad that no leader from my PAS who has succumbed to this ugly temptation.

oh really... the manner in which Najib and Hisham conduct MH370 drama is unprecedented by itself, never seen before from any country that deals with tragedy. with conflicting info, baseless accusations etc, they themselves are the real mess.

Oh yes..i support you 100%!

This is what happened when the leader does not provide enough space for clashing positions, opinions and views. They're only comfortable for one subservient position.
Then when tragedy occurred, facing international free press, they stumbled.

A great lesson to us in Pakatan, especially DAP. Mr Lim has to learn to accomodate the differing parties in the Party. So that we when are into power next GE, only competent people will rise up, not just a bunch of our own supporters.

People do you still remember the tv's 3 stooges . one going to take action against the media . The 2nd, the plane ended its flight in the Indian Ocean ,and the 3rd said the 2 iranian looks like Batolli (should be Mario balotelli) and only quite recently asked the media to leave his meeting. For your information mario balotelli is of dark african complextion. Neither 3 are competent, and they shouldnt have make me laugh at a time like this.

It would appear that the survey respondents have taken the cue and started to vote according to their race!

Najib said the plane had ended in the southern Indian Ocean but he didn't mean the plane had crushed. I guess he means the plane had dived into the ocean like a diver.

crushed, sir?

I believe it's an honest mistake in your quick effort to be sarcastic to turn this sad statement by the prime minister into a joke or something.

Not only our officials but a lot of Malaysians also don't have a proper command of the English language. They can even spell properly and get their choice of words mixed up. Anyway to hell with them all. Me worrying is not going to change a thing

problem with our opposition is they know how to condemn only. Even when umno become opposition in s'gor, same thing appear...most our politician know well how to perform the best condemnation or critic in the world. that a reason s'pore wanted their minister must excel in education because from good education we may end-up with educated person.

Najib and Hishamuddin made blunders in their often confusing and contradictory public statements. To add salt to injury Najib fled away from the media after reading his press statements on two occasions. It is disgraceful to see the Prime Minister running away when the media approached him.
