Dim Sum at Kedai Kopi Kong Meng
Kedai Kopi Kong Meng, like most things in Taiping, is old. A lou jiu pai (old signage in Cantonese), they've been dishing up breakfast staple, dim sum, for as long as anyone can remember! Once you're seated, waiters will bring a whole loong (bamboo basket for steaming) of dim sum favourites for you to choose from, old-school style.
Even the char siew pau features in their signboard
While the steamed dishes like siu mai and yu mai (fish balls) are only average, it's their char siew pau that they're famous for. With an outer skin that peels off in one piece, the pastry is soft and fluffy. Inside is a steaming hot savoury pork filling made out of lean strips of meat, unlike the red char siew types.
The classic lo mai kai will take you back to the days when you can devour a few of them at one go!
If you simply can't get enough of the pau, you can just bring a whole bunch home! Customers often order by the dozens and when we asked for 50 to pack, the boss lady didn't even flinch!
We love how the fluffy pastry is not chewy or hard to handle at all
