These accoutrements don't travel well, though. Using a laptop by itself on a coffee shop table or a hotel desk angles the users' arms and forces wrists to a non-neutral position, an ergonomic no-no for typing.

So what are mobile laptop users to do? Faced with the choice of optimizing for neck posture or wrist posture, Cornell recommends that users lean toward the latter — and that's where BlueLounge's Kickflip can help.

We spent two weeks with the $19.95, 15-inch Kickflip model, using our 2011 MacBook Pro alone on a desk without the usual array of ergonomic accessories. BlueLounge also offers a smaller, $17.95 model that fits the 13-inch MacBook Pro and the MacBook Air.

Design & Installation

The Kickflip is an extremely simple accessory, made of two pieces of plastic — attached at a hinge — and a strip of adhesive. The plastic feels sturdy, with a texture somewhere between soft-touch and a traditional hard finish.

The BlueLounge logo is embossed into the "foot" portion of the Kickflip, and peeks out from underneath the laptop when extended.

Running along the widest part of the Kickflip is a strip of what the company calls "German engineered gel adhesive." This is the only thing that binds the Kickflip to the laptop, and we found it to be plenty strong while maintaining its adhesiveness after repeated repositioning.

Speaking of repositioning, we would've welcomed the inclusion of some kind of guide to help us put the Kickflip on straight. The installation process — remove cover strip from adhesive, press onto laptop — isn't exactly difficult, but it is somewhat bothersome.

What's tougher, Gorilla Glass or Sapphire? The answer might surprise you

John Brownlee (12:00 pm PDT, Aug 30th)
Depending on who and when you ask, the iPhone 6 may or may not ship with a futuristic new Sapphire Glass display. Widely rumored to be nigh-invulnerable, Sapphire Glass is widely believed to be the technology that will make shattered iPhones a thing of the past. But will it really?
Seeking answers, the repair experts over at uBreakiFix have taken a piece of Gorilla Glass and a piece of Sapphire Glass through a series of torture tests to see which resists damage better. And the truth is that Sapphire isn’t actually as good as Gorilla Glass in one key scenario.
For their tests, uBreakiFix put Gorilla Glass and Sapphire Glass through three showdowns: a scratch resistance test using a tungsten drill bit, an impact test, and a four-point bend stress test.
The good news is that when it comes to being anti-scratch, nothing’s better than Sapphire. That’s why Apple uses it for the iPhone 5s TouchID system, after all. They don’t want scratches obscuring your fingerprint. Unfortunately, though, when it comes to bending and impact, Sapphire just doesn’t handle stress as well as Gorilla Glass.
Most of us are not trained to look at fear as a helpful thing, but fear actually flags awareness about what truly matters to us. Imagine fear as a giant boulder marking the spot where the treasure is buried. Underneath the fear of public speaking is the desire to be accepted. Underneath the fear of dying is likely the love of life or health.
This is really important to look at because if we only know the fear that exists, we can only honor the fear through our behavior. Fear-motivated behavior is not usually based in wisdom and forethought. Therefore, when we honor the fear instead of the treasure, we risk creating the very thing we are trying to avoid. The problem then becomes our behavior.
Let me give you an example: If someone is afraid that her partner is going to cheat on her, the treasure that is hiding underneath that fear is that she cherishes their loving, monogamous relationship.
If she aligns her behavior with her fear, she’s likely to be snoopy, suspicious, distrusting, possessive, withdrawn, anxious, depressed, and sarcastic, to name a few. These behaviors are not likely to bode well for the harmony in the relationship and may actually encourage the husband to withdrawal.
If, instead, she aligns her behavior with her target of creating a healthy, harmonious relationship, she is likely to be more loving, understanding, intimate, clear, fun, and trusting. These behaviors are likely to encourage a deeper, more intimate relationship with her partner.
When a fear moves beyond the “fantasized experience” into a more probable or actual scenario, it turns from fear into a call to action; it becomes time to do something differently. Then, the inquiry becomes, “What do I need to do?” Action either annihilates the fear or manages the situation fueling the fear.

19 Reasons To Start Running

You can probably come up with countless reasons for why you just can't run. You don't have enough time or enough energy or the right neighborhood or the right sports bra. You don't have the body or sturdy enough joints or the desire to compete in a race. You're just not crazy enough to be a runner.
To all of those reasons and more, we say: How do you know until you've tried?
The beauty of running is that just about everyone can play -- and succeed -- in a sport that has the power to change lives.
Here are just a few convincing reasons to start running. Let us know if you agree.
1. Because you can do it anywhere. We think it's safe to say that the more accessible your fitness routine is, the more you'll stick with it. Traveling for work? You can still go for a run! On vacation? You can still go for a run! Snow, sleet, rain, hail? Yep, you can still go for a run.
2. To make new friends. You don't have to toe the starting line to meet some friendly competition. Try a group run organized by a local running club or running store, or look for a Meetup group of like-minded runners near you.
3. To spend some time alone. Then again, if the running buddy thing isn't your scene, you might as well lace up for some "me time" and escape everything for a while.
4. To accomplish a goal. We don't have to tell you that it feels darn good to set a goal and then crush it. If you've always wanted to run -- whether your goal is to finish a marathon or just a loop around the block -- now's the time to lace up and check it off the list.
5. Because you might live longer. While more isn't always better, there's solid evidence that a moderate running routine will add years to your life, even if you're only logging a few minutes each day.
6. To burn calories. While we don't recommend exercising for the sole purpose of losing weight -- there are just so many other benefits! -- there's no denying that running is a big calorie burner. Your individual burn will vary depending on your sex, weight, level of activity and how far and fast you run, but you can expect to burn about 50 percent more calories per mile than you would walking the same distance.
7. For the smiles. A whole host of feel-good chemicals are released in the brain when we exercise that essentially act like drugs. It's called the Runner's High for a reason!
8. To remember. Learning a new language isn't the only way to keep an aging brain sharp. Research suggests that stayingphysically active is even more important inpreventing cognitive decline.
9. Because you'll sleep better. Regular exercisers reported significantly better shut-eye than couch potatoes in a 2013 survey from the National Sleep Foundation. But the survey's most promising finding was that a little bit goes a long way: Adding just 10 minutes of physical activity helped non-exercisers report better sleep.
10. To feel more energized. You might think that a run would drain you after a long day, but physical activity actually serves to reenergize, perhaps even better than a quick nap.
11. For your heart. The American Heart Association recommends 40 minutes of moderate to vigorous aerobic activity -- a.k.a. running -- three or four times a week to help lower blood pressure and cholesterol naturally.
12. To relax. Those same feel-good chemicals released in the brain that lift your spirits can also help alleviate stress, even though exercise is technically a stressor on the body.
13. Because you might reduce your cancer risk. According to the National Cancer Institute, there is strong evidence thatphysically active people have lower risks of colon and breast cancer. Emerging research suggests exercise confers some protection against endometrial, lung and prostate cancers, too.
14. Because you'll get to spend more time outside. And a little extra time in nature in turn can keep you calm, happy and energized.
15. To see more of new places. There's nothing wrong with a casual stroll through your new neighborhood or the city you're vacationing in, but you could see a whole lot more at a faster pace!
16. Because you'll (probably) get to buy new shoes. If you haven't run in a while (or ever before), you'll probably need some new sneaks. They're about the only essential gear for running -- aside from the right sports bra for the ladies -- and who doesn't love shoe shopping?
17. To protect your bones. Weight-bearing exercise like running is key to building strong and healthy bones and slowing bone loss. (And no, running won't cause arthritis.)
18. To stay sniffle-free. You just might breeze through cold and flu season thanks to your new running routine. Moderate amounts of exercise seem to bolster the immune system's ability to ward off viruses.
19. To make a difference. When you're ready, try a race for charity. When the training miles get tough, remember the cause you signed up to run for -- and the people your running can benefit.

Cable companies want to stop the best internet in America from growing

ethernet-internet-cord-stock_1020.0.jpg
A group representing giants in the cable industry is trying to shut down two municipalities' proposals to expand their public broadband networks, arguing that public broadband has a "mixed record" and can be harmful to taxpayers, despite these two networks already being successful where they're already operational. Laws in 20 statesprevent municipalities from creating their own broadband networks — much to the pleasure of private cable companies, which have shown an impressive dedication to avoiding any competition and any suggestion that their service is merely a utility. Municipalities have on occasion created their own public networks to make up for shortcomings from local internet providers, and it's easy to see why private providers wouldn't want that around.
CHATTANOOGA OFFERS GIGABIT INTERNET. YES, GIGABIT.
The two municipalities, those of Chattanooga, TN, and Wilson, NC, have petitioned the FCC to allow them to work around state laws that block their broadband service's expansion. The FCC has previously said that it plans to use its powers to invalidate these laws, but there's some contention over whether it can do that. In a filing and blog post today, USTelecom — which the Guardian says represents Comcast and Time Warner Cable, among other industry giants — argues that the FCC doesn't have the power to do this. That's hardly the only reason that USTelecom provides for why these municipalities should remain blocked, however, generally arguing that it should be up to the state to decide. For what it's worth, state governors are in agreement. The National Governors Association also submitted a comment on Friday asking that the FCC "honor the longstanding partnership between states and the federal government" and reject these two municipalities' petitions.
While USTelecom is right that some public broadband networks have turned into blunders, many have been incredibly successful and have actually proven to be legitimate competitors to private networks. In fact, Chattanooga offers gigabit internet to every home and business in its community — a speed that's still incredibly rare to see from private providers in the US. Community Broadband Networks says that 40 communities in 13 states are currently offering gigabit service.
With the FCC having said that it will allow municipal broadband networks to work around these laws, it seems that the cable companies may have an uphill battle. Still, it's not clear when the FCC will find time to rule on this — and, if the cable industry loses, it wouldn't be surprising to see it continue the fight from there.

lucid dreaming
By Steven Bancarz| Lucid dreaming is one of the most extraordinary experiences you could have as a human being.  Being awake within a dream, you are able to consciously interact with it just as you interact in the real world. Everything is saturated with colour and vibrantly alive, and it feels far more real than waking life does.
There are many practical benefits to lucid dreaming.  For me personally, it reminded be of how much life is like a dream and helped me appreciate the impermanence.  It helped me cultivate more consciousness and awareness in waking life by reminding me that I don’t have to be a victim to my surroundings, and can instead become lucid and take control.  But most profoundly, lucid dreaming led to both of my out-of-body experiences, which confirmed to me my identity as an eternal soul inhabiting a temporary human body. Here are the top ten ways to induce lucid dreaming:
1. Dream Diaries. Spending at least 10 minutes in putting down and recording your dreams in the morning. Even if you wake up in the middle of the night, try to remember and write down what happened.
2.  Reality Checks. Performing as many as 10 or more reality checks during the day, and these should be spaced out during the day. Does your reflection look normal in the mirror? Do the palms of your hands look normal close-up? How long do you stay in the air when you jump? Perhaps even make a marking on your hand and look at it throughout the day, and in your dream you will notice it missing and will become lucid.
3. Manifest.  Spending up to 20 minutes in the afternoon to incubate a lucid dream. The techniques to use here include meditation, self hypnosis, and visualization of what you wish to experience in your dream.
4. Affirmation.  Before you go to bed at night, repeat this to yourself: “I will remember to recognize that I’m dreaming”. Fall asleep repeating this in your head, and this awareness will subconsciously carry into your dreams. Know that in your dream, you will remember that you are dreaming. Affirmation is important.
5. Identifying Your Dream Signs. You may also have that nasty experience of always running out of fuel whenever you are on your way to write a final exam. Again, it may be that you always have that horrible experience of your teeth falling off from your mouth. The best and most reliable way of determining your personal dream signs is by keeping a dream journal. Whenever you check it, you can easily identify those dream signs that
are regularly occurring. When your future dreams contain them, you will realize it’s just a dream sign.
6.  Imagination Of Desired Dream. Imagine yourself being back to a previous dream. But this time, you have to re-live the ending differently. Visualize the scene in the dream in such a way that the details are clearer than what is obtainable in the previous dream. Next, search for the dream signs. Of course, this should be some unusual characters,  locations and objects which should reveal the dream to be mere fantasy; something you wouldn’t see in real life. Next, start telling yourself that you are dreaming. Although you are just day dreaming (and this is by no means a lucid dream) continue to experience an imagined lucid dream fantasy. Do whatever you would do if this were a real lucid dream.
7. Wake Up At Night.  Research has shown that waking up during sleep can increase one’s chance of being lucid. So, in order to have more lucid dreams, you may want to wake yourself up in the night and bring yourself to full consciousness for a few minutes. You can spend those few minutes in reading about lucid dreams, meditating, visualizing, etc.  Maybe even set an alarm for 3 or 4 am.
8. Direct Your Half-Asleep State.  At times, you may wake up in the middle of the night and found yourself in this dreamy state. If this occurs, there is no need for you panic for your body and mind are already relaxed. Just drift into the dream world and of course, this can easily be accomplished without the least effort.
9. Snap Out Of The Dream.  Fully Step Into Lucidity.  This step involves stepping into the lucid world and this means submerging your awareness fully into the lucid dream as well as stabilizing the dream to eradicate any chance of waking up.  Stay calm, don’t get over excited and wake yourself up.  Realize that you are dreaming, and keep your attention concentrated in the present moment within your lucid dream.
10. Have fun! It’s a wonderful experience to have, and there is nothing anyone or anything can do in a lucid dream to harm you.  If you find yourself scared when you become lucid, know that you are always being guided and protected, and that you can wake yourself up at any time you wish.  Talk with people, manipulate your surroundings, try to leave your body, appreciate the vividness of the world around you.
It’s important to remember that there is nothing to fear in a lucid dream.  Some figures you encounter may scare you, but remember that everything you encounter is a reflection of yourself.  Love them and forgive them, and know that when you do so you are loving and forgiving an aspect of you.  Here is an awesome TED talk video about nightmares and lucid dreaming as a medium for spiritual development:

Grey hull of the iPhone 6 shows off striking new antenna design

Alex Heath (3:37 pm PDT, Aug 29th)
When you start to see assembled iPhone 6 devices basically powered on, you know it’s getting late in the rumor mill cycle. Basically every part imaginable for Apple’s forthcoming smartphone has leaked ahead of its September 9th unveiling.
Now hi-quality shots of what looks like a near finished iPhone 6 hull have surfaced. They show the defined antenna lines on the back as seen in previous parts, but this time they’ve been colored to look more at home on the phone.
French site Nowhereelse.fr found the pics on Chinese site Weibo, where many Apple part leaks have originated over the years. The rounded edges, embedded Apple logo, andTrue Tone LED flash holes all line up with previous leaks.
To accommodate the larger design of the 4.7-inch display, it’s clear that Apple is changing up at least the aesthetic look of its antenna design. Earlier leaks of rear shells showed cruder lines across the back of the device, though now it looks they will be painted to match the appropriate color.
As always, this could be an earlier prototype and not exactly what Apple is going with, but this late in the game, it’s probable that is is a near-finished shell.

Sahara Forest Project Converts Desert into Oasis

Recently a trio of entrepreneurs announced an incredible solution for the world’s resource problems: turn the Sahara desert into a source for food, water, and energy. TheSahara Forest Project (.PDF) is a solution that combines seemingly disparate technologies –Concentrated solar power and Seawater Greenhouses – and turns them into a mean, green super-massive biomachine. The elegant system could potentially produce enough energy for all of Africa and Europe while turning one of the world’s most inhospitable regions into a flourishing oasis.
The Sahara Forest Project is the brainchild ofCharlie PatonMichael Pawlyn and Bill Watts. The project aims to provide a source of renewable energy, food and water to desert regions around the world by taking a number of proven technologies and merging them into a system that works holistically to do its work. It’s an exciting synergy, as both Seawater greenhouses and concentrated solar power technologies are perfectly suited to work in hot, dry climates.
Seawater Greenhouse converts sea water into fresh water using nothing more than the sun’s rays. It does this by running air through a structure whose walls are infused with cold sea water. As air enters it is immediately cooled, humidified, and then condensed into fresh water by sunlight.

iOS developers seemingly confirm iPhone 6's 1334 x 750 resolution

John Brownlee (10:55 am PDT, Aug 30th)
This image might prove the iPhone 6 has a 1334 x 750 display.
Last weekend, we reported that the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 seemed likely to boast a 1334 x 750 Retina Display, while the 5.5-inch iPhone 6L could have a 461 PPI Super- Retina Display. Now it looks like that working iPhone 6cobbled together may have confirmed the iPhone 6’s resolution.
Today, iOS developer Steven Troughton-Smith tweeted:
The size of the elements onscreen for the@feldvolk iPhone 6 video *seem* to confirm @gruber‘s 4.7’ resolution ‘hypothesis’   (~375x667pt)
— Steve T-S (@stroughtonsmith) August 30, 2014
In this tweet, Troughton-Smith is noting that the “Connect To iTunes” image seen when the hacked-together iPhone 6 is booted up, it doesn’t actually fill the entire display, as it does on the right. And as MacRumors notes, doing the math and figuring out exactly where the “Connect To iTunes” image begins and ends on the screen implies that the iPhone 6 has roughly 17.5% more pixels on each axis than the iPhone 5s.
Meanwhile, iOS developer James Thompson has tweeted that iOS 8 seems to prefer loading a 3x image over a 2x image on existing devices:
Interesting… UIImage on iOS 8b5 will load a @3x image in preference to an @2x one, even on a @2x device. Not so on iOS 7. Bug, but also hmm…
— James Thomson (@jamesthomson)August 29, 2014
The bottom line? It’s looking pretty likely that Apple will be rolling out a 1334 x 750 pixel display on September 9th, and the larger iPhone 6 will get a big jump in pixel density to follow suit. If you want the highest-resolution iPhone, you should wait for the 5.5-inch iPhone 6, which may or may not be unveiled on September 9th.
