The Dutch Orientalist Christiaan Snouck Hurgronje was fluent in Arabic, had studied Islam, travelled to Jeddah, pretended to convert to Islam, and was then admitted to Makkah as a pilgrim. There, he took some of the earliest photographs of Makkah, and recorded (using the newly-invented recording machine of Edison, which employed wax cylinders) Sura al-Duha in the recitation of a local Qari.
