PETALING JAYA: Cheras Umno chief Syed Ali Alhabshee today took on the role of apologist for Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak, saying there was a blessing in the scuttling of the Nothing2Hide forum.
The blessing, according to him, took the form of a revelation that former prime minister Mahathir Mohamad loved Umno so much that he did not mind coming face to face with Najib.
He noted that Najib did not attend the event on the advice of the police, who cited security concerns after a fracas broke out outside the Dewan Tun Hussein Onn, the venue of the event.
“But the former prime minister’s attendance showed that he still loves Umno enough to be willing to face the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak” and to “explain to the rakyat why he has been raising certain issues.”
“This is a blessing,” Syed Ali said in a press statement.
He speculated that Najib would have attended the forum if the police had not advised him against it.
“Both Najib and Dr Mahathir were willing to attend; this showed that both were sincere,” he said.
It was a sign that a dialogue between the two was possible, he added.
He urged the Prime Minister’s Department to arrange a private meeting between Najib and Mahathir.
The meeting, he said, should be done in a “family” atmosphere. “There’s no need to meet in front of the public.”
